NADD Supports Court Victory
NADD and the Arc of Virginia filed a brief as amici curiae in support
of appellant's position in a Virginia appeals court. Counsel
for a man convicted of murder in Virginia appealed his death sentence
on the grounds of his intellectual disability. Determination of
the man's intellectual disability was hampered by his mental illness.
The court has now ruled in favor of appellant. For more

Positive Identity Development
Author: Karyn Harvey, PhD
Positive Identity Development is an exciting new approach to
treatment for individuals with intellectual disabilities. This
book provides a new theoretical perspective on treatment along with a
variety of innovative tools. It rejects reducing adults with
intellectual disabilities to a mere compilation of their behaviors
and promotes the use of a positive, therapeutic approach to each
unique individual. Psychologists, social workers and therapists
should be able to use the tools presented in this book to directly
enhance the effectiveness of the treatment they provide to adults
with intellectual disabilities. This book promotes well-being on
every level and explores a broad range of issues relevant to the life
and mental health of adults with intellectual disabilities

Mental Health and Environmental Exposures
Exposure to lead, mercury, aluminum, pesticides, solvents, and other
chemicals may play a part in causing psychiatric symptoms, although
the factors that contribute to mental illness are very complex, and
the ways and degrees that toxic exposures contribute to mental
illness are not clearly understood. To work on this issue, NADD
has helped organize and is chairing a work group on Mental Health and
Environment, organized under the auspices of the Collaborative on
Health and the Environment. For additional information, click
