This presentation will address the differential diagnosis of such behavior problems, with an emphasis on the very high levels of exposure to violence and other kinds of trauma in young children in urban communities as well as service planning for such children, which requires an integration of developmental and parent-child mental health services.

Independent of intellectual ability, children with Autism Spectrum Disorders often have emotional and behavioral problems, some of which are characteristic of the disorder (core symptoms), some related to the child’s cognitive patterns and their interaction with their environment, and some appear to be due to additional mental disorders (comorbidity). This presentation will focus on how to differentiate the origins of such problems, their interaction with intellectual impairment and adaptive behavioral (Dual Diagnosis), and the implications for treatment.
