Educational Objectives:

Upon completion of the program participants will be able to:

  • Describe ongoing efforts between the two Ohio state agencies.

  • Define Bio-Psycho-Social Formulation. 
  • Identify specific areas of pharmacologic management in which to use caution in a person with a dual diagnosis.
  • Describe age-appropriate support role models. 
  • Describe the need for local service collaboration for adults and children with dual diagnosis.
  • Describe atypical features of mood disorders in people with intellectual disabilities and discuss the evidence suggesting that agitated behaviors should not be used as symptom substitutes for DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria.
  • Describe strategies for safer bottled water choices.
  • Describe the relationship between aggression and psychiatric illness in people with ASD and IDs.
  • Describe several specific treatments aimed at altering core features of ASDs.
  • Review how diagnostic criteria for ADHD may be modified for persons with ID.
  • Describe how different mental heath disorders can present in long term data review.
  • Identify at least two behavior interventions for diet behavior plans.
  • Identify unique assessment approaches to psychiatric emergencies with the dually diagnosed population.
  • Identify effective supports and available resources to address the primary issues of communication and mobility for persons who are deaf-blind.

The Ohio Department of Mental Health (ODMH) has been approved as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), 8405 Greensboro Drive, Suite 800, McLean, VA 22102. As an IACET Authorized Provider, ODMH offers CEUs for its programs that qualify under IACET guidelines. ODMH is authorized by IACET to offer up to 1.15 CEUs for this program.

This program has been approved by the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities for continuing credits for a total of 6 Hours for Day 1 for the entire day, and a total of 6 Hours for Day 2 for the entire day, in the following areas:

Adult Services; Case Management; Early Intervention; Investigative Agent; County Board Members and Supt/Asst Supt (Services/Programs/Supports Streams).

Keynote Speaker Bios:

Sandy Stephenson has been the Director of the Ohio Department of Mental Health since June, 2007. Prior to this appointment, Ms. Stephenson spent twenty years as the Executive Director for Southeast, Inc., Recovery & Mental Health Care Services in Columbus, Ohio. Ms. Stephenson holds a B.S.S.W., an M.S.W., and a Master of Arts in Public Administration from Ohio State University.

John L. Martin is the Director of the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities. He brings to this position more than 30 years of experience in working on behalf of people with disabilities and their families. Prior to his appointment at ODMRDD, Mr. Martin served as Executive Director of Sunshine Inc. of Northwest Ohio for nearly 20 years. He holds an M.A. in Community Psychology from Temple University and a B.A. in Special Education from the Illinois State Normal University.

Julie P. Gentile, MD, is an Assistant Professor at Wright State University Department of Psychiatry in Dayton, Ohio. She is the psychiatrist for the Montgomery County Board of MR/DD Mental Health Program and Medical Director for Consumer Advocacy Model. She is a program administrator for the Ohio Coordinating Center of Excellence in Dual Diagnosis (Mental Illness/Developmental Disabilities) and provides psychiatric assessments for dual diagnosis individuals for the western region of the state of Ohio. She is active in the training of medical students and psychiatry residents.

Lauren Charlot, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, MA and serves as the Director of the UMass Multidisciplinary ID/MH Consultation Team. She is currently a co-investigator on an NIH sponsored investigation regarding depression in children with ID and is initiating a pilot study of adverse drug events in persons with dual diagnosis (ID/MH). She is the lead author on the “Mood Disorders” chapter in the Diagnostic Manual–Intellectual Disability published by the NADD Press.
