Educational Objectives:

Upon completion of the program participants will be able to:

  • Identify five (5) major components of successful restraint reduction programs across treatment settings;

  • Identify two diagnostic criteria adaptations to the DSM-IV-TR;
  • Develop a Least Restrictive Treatment model that is agency and person specific;
  • List methods for data collection and preparation of referral information to facilitate the neurological evaluation process;
  • Identify specific programming needs related to improving resident food choices;
  • Discuss policy options for addressing health care needs;
  • Identify the major features of Williams syndrome;
  • Identify vulnerabilities to specific mental health concerns in individuals with ASD;
  • Identify the characteristics of personality disorders that may result from intellectual disability;
  • Identify at least two methods to increase IDT communication/collaboration;
  • Identify resources available and needed to pursue career opportunities in the arts;
  • List medication classes and options within these classes, in the treatment of mood disorders in individuals with DD;
  • Identify and develop concrete team member counseling roles; and
  • Identify how attitudes regarding ID may be shaped by experience.

The Ohio Department of Mental Health (ODMH) is an approved Authorized Provider of continuing education and training by the International Association for Continuing Eeducation and Training (IACET) and has awarded 5.5 contact hours and 0.55 CEUs for those completing DAY 1 and 6.0 contact hours and 0.6 CEUs for those completing DAY 2.

The Ohio Department of Mental Health is approved by the Ohio Psychological Association – MCE Program to offer continuing education for psychologists. The Ohio Department of Mental Health #311334820 maintains responsibility for this program.

Continuing Education Credits and/or Continuing Professional Development Hours

This program has been approved by the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities for continuing credits for a total of 6 hours for Day 1 for the entire day, and a total of 6 hours for Day 2 for the entire day, in the following areas:
Adult Services/Day Habilitation; Eearly Intervention; Investigative Agent; County Board Members; Supt/Asst Supt (Services/Programs/Supports Stream) and Service and Support Administration.

NOTE: You must attend the entire day in order to receive credits/contact hours.

Keynote Speaker Bios:

John McGonigle, PhD, has over 30 years of clinical experience in dual disabilities. He is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Program Director for the Center for Autism and Developmental Disorders. His background and training are in Behavioral Psychology and Neuropsychiatric Disorders. He is a national consultant to health care organizations on creating restraint free environments. He has published journal articles and book chapters in behavioral and medical journals on issues related to staff training, behavioral interventions and developing systems of mental health care for Complex Needs Populations. He is the Chair of the Behavior Management Committee and Co-Chair of the Restraint and Seclusion Committee for Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.

Robert Fletcher, DSW, ACSW, is the Founder and CEO of the National Association for the Dually Diagnosed (NADD). He has been actively involved in clinical, program and social policy issues in the field of dual diagnosis for the past twenty-five years. He is the author and editor of professional publications and books, including Therapy Approaches in People with Mental Retardation. Dr. Fletcher’s vision has lead to the publication of the DM-ID: Diagnostic Manual–Intellectual Disability: A Textbook of Diagnosis of Mental Disorders in Persons with Intellectual Disability and the DM-ID: Diagnostic Manual–Intellectual Disability: A Clinical Guide for Diagnosis of Mental Disorders in Persons with Intellectual Disability, which were written in association with the American Psychiatric Association (APA).

Robert King, MD, has provided psychiatric care, as a member of multiple, community-based interdisciplinary teams, to individuals with intellectual disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorders. Dr. King currently is the consulting psychiatrist to several assistive community treatment teams, including one based in Brock, Ontario, Canada, which exclusively supports individuals with developmental disabilities and severe and persistent mental illness. He is particularly interested in building system capacity to support individuals not previously well served by existing resources. He is a faculty member of the Departments of Psychiatry of the University of Ottawa, the University of Western Ontario and Northern Ontario School of Medicine. Dr. King has lectured extensively throughout North America.
