NADD Teleconference Series

The National Association for the Dually Diagnosed (NADD) is proud to offer its teleconference series featuring experts in the field of dual diagnosis! Teleconferences allow you to participate in an educational program without having to make travel plans or even leave your office.

How It Works

The sessions will take place on the telephone. However, you may have as many people as you would like around the phone. Each registrant, who is the key contact person, will receive a confirmation letter listing all sessions signed up for as well as an 800 number to access the teleconferences. This person's name will be given to the operator, and must be the one who calls, in order to participate in the teleconference. Handouts are available three (3) days prior to each teleconference for participants to access online. Access information will be provided in the confirmation letter, as well. Each session will last 60-minutes. The session will include the presentation, and a facilitated Q&A session with the presenters. The sessions feature experts in a variety of different areas in the field of mental health and developmental disabilities. Mark your calendar... You won't want to miss out!

What’s New in Genes, Drugs, and Rock and Roll

Jarrett Barnhill, MD, DFAPA, FAACAP, University of North Carolina-School of Medicine, Chapel Hill, NC

In recent years we have seen an explosive growth in treatment options for individuals with dual diagnosis. Innovations include new medical therapies as well as an increased understanding of the genetic factors that influence drug metabolism and clinical effects. This presentation will introduce and explain the relevance of these new findings to the non-psychopharmacologist.

Introduction to: “Success Stories from the Front Line: Intellectual Disabilities & Mental Health”

Robin Friedlander, MD, FRCP (C), University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada; Tina Donnelly, RPN

Success Stories from the Frontline is an anthology of first person stories submitted by patients and their families about the experience of living with an intellectual disability and mental illness.  Stories of the journey by individuals with intellectual disability and mental illness from illness to recovery are important both for mental health clinicians to use as learning tools and inspiration for the future of their field and for clients, caregivers and families to hear, offering them support and hope when they or someone they care about is suffering from serious mental illness.  These stories can provide a valuable road map of the illness journey, what recovery can look like, and what supports are needed along the way.

Use of a Biopsychosocial Model of Assessment by a Dual Diagnosis Consultation Team in Ontario

Donna C. Lougheed, MD, FRCPC, Dual Diagnosis Consultation Outreach Team, Royal Ottawa Health Care Group, Ottawa, ONT, Canada

What is a biopsychocial model of assessment?  What are its advantages for staff and clients?  How does the template used by DDCOT help staff understand complex etiologies and the origins of psychiatric diagnoses, as well as develop appropriate and helpful treatment recommendations?  Our multidisciplinary team, including nurses, social workers, occupational therapist, and speech and language therapists, has been using and refining this assessment template over the past six years in our work with the spectrum of problems experienced by developmentally delayed adults in community settings.

Top Ten Things to Remember about Individuals with ID and MH Disorders

Lauren R. Charlot, PhD, University of Massachusetts Memorial Health Care, Worcester, MA.

In this presentation, critical factors affecting the accurate diagnosis of psychiatric disorders in people with ID will be reviewed.  Included among these are: the manner in which one’s developmental profile might impact on the clinical features of a psychiatric disorder; challenges in conducting a usual mental health evaluation of a person with ID; medical problems and medication side effects that may provoke or worsen alterations in mood, mental status or behavior; the ubiquitous nature of aggression and other challenging behaviors in patients with ID referred for psychiatric evaluation; disorders that may be over-diagnosed and problems which may be under-recognized.  The importance of considering the effects of stress and change on mood and behavior are also emphasized with some discussion of how newer, positive behavioral assessment and treatment approaches can help to guide multimodal treatment of individuals with ID and psychiatric disorder.

Comprehensive Community-based Services for Children and Adolescents with Developmental Disabilities and Mental Health Needs

Joan B. Beasley, Ph.D., Center for Developmental Disabilities Evaluation and Research, Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center, Waltham, MA

A community assessment process used in various states in the U.S. to evaluate services for individuals with developmental disabilities and behavioral health needs is presented. A major goal of the assessment is to identify resource gaps that may lead to the use of expensive and restrictive services, emergency services, and lengthy or unnecessary psychiatric inpatient hospital stays.  In the case of children and adolescents, service outcomes include the trend toward out-of-state placements for some individuals. A process to analyze the system, include all stakeholders in problem solving, identify gaps, and develop effective solutions will be discussed.  A model program to better meet the needs of children in their communities will be presented.
