Ed Comer presents the Ed Comer Award for Excellence to NADD Founder
and CEO Robert Fletcher. |
Dr. Robert Fletcher, Founder and CEO of NADD, received the Ed Comer
Award for Excellence at the Ohio NADD Conference in Columbus, Ohio in
September, 2009. The award was established in 2008 by the Ohio
Coordinating Center of Excellence (CCOE) in Dual Diagnosis (Mental
Illness/Developmental Disabilities. The award is named for Ed Comer
who provided program administration for the Ohio CCOE from its
inception until his retirement in April of 2008. The award is
presented to individuals who make extraordinary contributions in the
field of mental illness and intellectual disabilities by motivating
systems of care to work together, by establishing training programs
to expand skills and confidence for those who work in the field, by
insisting that more clinical services are necessary to maintain
individuals with dual diagnosis in their home communities, and by
promoting more research efforts in the field of dual diagnosis. The
award is presented on behalf of all of those individuals whose lives
have been improved by these efforts.
Originally intended for an Ohioan, the CCOE decided to present the
award to Dr. Fletcher because he is a primary source of motivation,
collegiality, advice, and collaboration for the Ohio CCOE and was
there for Ohio since its inception. He consistently and freely lends
his passion, confidence, expertise, professional contacts, and
friendship to the Ohio CCOE. Many lives have vastly improved because
of Dr. Fletcher's willingness to partner and involve NADD in all of
Ohio's efforts for all individuals with dual diagnosis. Dr.
Fletcher's national and international accomplishments of improving
the lives of people with dual diagnosis are well known. The state of
Ohio wanted to formally recognize him for his significant
accomplishments throughout the state of Ohio.

Human Needs and Intellectual Disabilities: Applications for Person
Centered Planning, Dual Diagnosis, and Crisis Intervention
Steven Reiss, Ph.D.
Human Needs and Intellectual Disabilities identifies the 12 human
needs most relevant to the lives of people with intellectual
disabilities, autism and related developmental disabilities. It
includes detailed, practical suggestions for caregivers or parents
interested in the happiness, quality of life, and self-determintion
of their loved ones or consumers. The book includes detailed,
practical suggestions for reducing episodes of challenging behavior
and psychiatric symptoms in people with a dual diagnosis
(intellectual disabilities and mental illness). It shows how to
substitute the language of individuality (e.g., "friendly
person") for the language of disability (e.g., "person with
disability"). It also reduces the tendency of planners to
confuse their own value system for that of the consumer. The
book includes scholarly reviews of dual diagnosis literature on
mental illness, prevalence, and assessment.

Positive Identity Development
Author: Karyn Harvey, PhD
Positive Identity Development is an exciting new approach to
treatment for individuals with intellectual disabilities. This
book provides a new theoretical perspective on treatment along with a
variety of innovative tools. It rejects reducing adults with
intellectual disabilities to a mere compilation of their behaviors
and promotes the use of a positive, therapeutic approach to each
unique individual. Psychologists, social workers and therapists
should be able to use the tools presented in this book to directly
enhance the effectiveness of the treatment they provide to adults
with intellectual disabilities. This book promotes well-being on
every level and explores a broad range of issues relevant to the life
and mental health of adults with intellectual disabilities
