Competency-Based Dual Diagnosis Certification Program

NADD is embarking on a major multi-year initiative that will improve the quality of services provided to individuals with a dual diagnosis (MI/ID): the NADD Competency-Based Dual Diagnosis Certification Program for programs and personnel.  Three separate 15-20 person subcommittees are working hard to develop competency-based certification programs for:

  1. Programs/Facilities

  2. Clinicians/Professionals

  3. Direct Support Staff

A license or degree no longer predicts competency.  It is important that certification be competency-based because this will provide a reliable, valid assessment of the ability of the individual or organization to perform appropriate functions.  A competency-based system recognizes the importance of knowledge, skills, attitudes, abilities, personality traits, and other characteristics in performing the required functions.

Certification in dual diagnosis is important to:

  1. Provide a care provider system with a demonstrated level of expertise in co-occurring MI/ID

  2. Provide a workforce with a demonstrated level of expertise in co-occurring MI/ID

  3. Assure that public and private healthcare dollars are purchasing effective services

  4. Assist families/advocates make informed choices about services

The NADD Competency-Based Dual Diagnosis Certification Program will be a gold standard that can be used in all states and will assist states and localities in decision making about services, contracting, funding, and infrastructure.

Positive Identity Development is an exciting new approach to treatment for individuals with intellectual disabilities.  This book provides a new theoretical perspective on treatment along with a variety of innovative tools.  It rejects reducing adults with intellectual disabilities to a mere compilation of their behaviors and promotes the use of a positive, therapeutic approach to each unique individual. Psychologists, social workers and therapists should be able to use the tools presented in this book to directly enhance the effectiveness of the treatment they provide to adults with intellectual disabilities.
