Counselling People with Developmental Disabilities Who Have Been Sexually Abused

Author: Sheila Mansell & Dick Sobsey

Description:

Conceived and developed because of the growing body of research that demonstrates that people with developmental disabilities are at greater risk for sexual abuse and that appropriately adapted therapy services for people with developmental disabilities who have been sexually abused are rarely available. Training materials consist of two parts: (1) this book and (2) Alone in a Crowd, an introductory videotape for counselors of people with developmental disabilities who have been sexually abused. These materials may be used independently or in combination. The video tape is intended to introduce some of the basic issues and approaches to counseling people with developmental disabilities who have been abused.

Positive Identity Development

Author: Karyn Harvey, PhD

Positive Identity Development is an exciting new approach to treatment for individuals with intellectual disabilities.  This book provides a new theoretical perspective on treatment along with a variety of innovative tools.  It rejects reducing adults with intellectual disabilities to a mere compilation of their behaviors and promotes the use of a positive, therapeutic approach to each unique individual. Psychologists, social workers and therapists should be able to use the tools presented in this book to directly enhance the effectiveness of the treatment they provide to adults with intellectual disabilities. This book promotes well-being on every level and explores a broad range of issues relevant to the life and mental health of adults with intellectual disabilities
