Assessing Medical Issues Associated with Behavioral / Psychiatric Problems in Persons with Intellectual Diasbility

Author: Ann Poindexter, M.D.

FOREWORD:

After forty years of working with individuals with mental retardation/intellectual disability and behaviorallpsychiatric problems, I continue to be impressed with the importance of medical issues in the presentation of behavioral symptoms. While they usually are not the sole cause of behavioral symptoms, they almost always are involved to some extent. This book is my attempt to set down the ways I’ve learned to look for these problems—to quantify the internal algorithm I use when presented with a person whose behavior isn’t doing well.” I’ve attempted to lay out questions which I feel should be asked, which I’ve listed immediately following this note, and then I’ve amplified discussion of each area in later chapters. I have included four illustrative cases—”Very Important People.” (I have, of course, used pseudonyms for these individuals, and would like to thank Jarrett Barnhill, Michael Mayer, and Sue Gabriel for their help in case materials.) In view of the great importance I place on the team approach to these problems, I’m also including some self-directed instructional courses which can be used for training team members in some of the issues.
