Description:
Caring for people who have both mental retardation and mental illness
can be quite complex and time consuming. However, recognizing mental
disorders in individuals with mental retardation can make quite a
difference in how they are understood and treated, which greatly
improves their quality of life.
This book brings together a number of clinicians and clinician
researchers, experts in the field with years of experience in
providing mental health care for individuals with mental retardation.
It is designed to help clinicians and health service providers with
limited experience in working with such individuals. It focuses on
assessment, recognition of psychiatric symptoms and various treatment
options available. It discusses the difficulties of doing a
comprehensive assessment and gives guidelines, as well as,
descriptions of some tools that might be used. It looks at DSM-IV
disorders, describes how the symptoms may manifest, gives some
commonly observed behaviors that help identify mental disorders and
provides some clinical examples. Discussion of treatment includes
modalities used with individuals with mental retardation, a
description of how comprehensive care might be provided and a review
of the ethical issues involved in providing this care. |

Positive Identity Development
Author: Karyn Harvey, PhD
Positive Identity Development is an exciting new approach to
treatment for individuals with intellectual disabilities. This
book provides a new theoretical perspective on treatment along with a
variety of innovative tools. It rejects reducing adults with
intellectual disabilities to a mere compilation of their behaviors
and promotes the use of a positive, therapeutic approach to each
unique individual. Psychologists, social workers and therapists
should be able to use the tools presented in this book to directly
enhance the effectiveness of the treatment they provide to adults
with intellectual disabilities. This book promotes well-being on
every level and explores a broad range of issues relevant to the life
and mental health of adults with intellectual disabilities
